Since ancient timoes, man has been keeping pets, especially dogs as companions. In our effort to tame and civilize them, we have tried to make use of their barking abilities. No other animal from the canine family barks except for the dog. We have been training dogs to inculcate the habit of barking in their daily lives so that they can act as guards and scare off trespassers.
The way a dog chooses to communicate with his owner largely depends on his routine and the teachings of his owner. A dog can start barking to get your attention, to say something or even to show his enthusiasm. If nothing is done to stop him when he barks unnecessarily, then he might never break the habit. Therefore, it would be good to try to understand what your dog wants to get started.
A dog will keep on barking for no reason when he sees that his bark is getting him attention. But to get him to stop, you have to play the waiting game. Be patient and wait for him to tire from barking. Once he is done barking, give him a little attention. This way he will realize that it is only when he is quiet, he gets noticed.
Some dogs have the tendency to bark at just anyone they see, even if they are a safe distance away from him and the house. This is due to the dog’s defensive nature. To sidetrack him when he starts to bark, call out to him or offer him a treat. This way anytime that you call out to him, he will see that his silent behaviour is more fruitful.
It is a good thing to take pains to learn about your dog’s behaviour. This will bring you both closer and will cure him of his need for attention.
