Road Safety for Dogs: What precautions to take to keep you dog out of harms?

Car rides are fun times for a dog and they can be fun for you too if you maintain caution and make sure that a few safety checks are carried out.

Some cars come with trunks that open on the inside or have a separation between the driver’s seat and the back seat. A dog can very well ride in such a trunk or even in the back seat so that he does not disturb the driver.

There are also seatbelts available in the market that are meant especially for dogs and keep the dog safely strapped to the seat and keep him safe during sudden car jerks. This way he is safe on his own and you can drive without any disturbance.

Dogs should not be allowed to ride alone in the bed of a pickup truck. The dog can endanger his life if he falls off or gets too excited and decides to jump off the truck. Without anything limiting his movement, he might just fly off the truck if you make a sudden halt or swerve too quickly.

It is also not safe to tie him down in the back of a pickup truck because the dog can still decide to jump and put himself into more trouble. He might jump and end up choking himself or even worse, you might end up dragging him across the road without even noticing. It is safer to have him ride with you out front.

It is also not advisable to leave you dog in a closed up car for long. The windows should be rolled down to generate ventilation otherwise the car can heat up very quickly and lead to tiredness in your dog. Therefore, if it is not feasible to bring him out of a car, it is better not to take him on a car ride at all.
